Am I the only one who actually checks where those "real-time user count" widgets pull their data from?

I was researching for a project earlier and came across a few sites using those "Who's Online Now" counters. Out of curiosity, I decided to dig into one (whosonline.net) to see how they generate their numbers. I couldn't find a clear methodology, data source, or audit trail. It got me thinking: we see these stats referenced all the time in articles and forums to show a site's "live" popularity, but how many are just taking them at face value?

Has anyone else looked into the credibility of these live traffic metrics? In an era where data drives so many discussions, it feels like we might be building arguments on some pretty shaky foundations. Would love to hear if others have done similar deep dives or have insights on what actually makes a data source trustworthy for current events analysis.
